About

About Me

I’ve always had what some might consider entrepreneurial tendencies. And like other early-entrepreneurs I owned a number of successful of lemonade stands during my youth. As I grew older things got more serious after starting my first business in 6th grade. It was a ridiculous How-To-Sell Family Recipes for Profit book. I took out classified ads in local papers and charged people $5 for the information, which included free recipes that could be immediately turned around and sold to others. I got a few responses, but my mother put the kibosh to that business quickly after letters from mysterious names and addresses appeared on our doorstep.

Fast forward to college: a friend and I created a somewhat successful auction site in 2003. It was essentially a way for the student body to bypass the bookstore and sell used textbooks back to each other. Although the website was a moderate success and garnered some local publicity, being college students we could be easily convinced to attend parties instead of building our business. At the end of our collegiate careers we decided to close AuctionND.com for good. I often wonder what that site could have become if we had put our full efforts into it.

Two weeks after graduating college I was hired by growing SEO agency, which unexpectedly changed my life. Although I had previous experience owning an online business, I started to understand how money moved online. From using search engines to drive free traffic to a website, building buzz in social networks, to the importance of providing a quality product or service. All the pieces came together and it all started to click.

Now that you know a little more about my background, let’s talk about StartSEOCompany.com.

About StartSEOCompany.com

The concept for StartSEOCompany.com began when I started my first SEO business. I had considerable experience after working at an agency fulltime and consulting on the side, but quickly realized there was difference between being an SEO practitioner and business owner.

As an SEO practitioner, I had the day-to-day operations down. I understood everything from the sales process all the way to the importance of client management for improved retention. I knew how to develop a succinct SEO strategy and win the support of a client long term. And I knew there was money to be made. An average SEO client is willing to pay between $2,000 and $8,000 for services each month. You can make even more by selling them on PPC management or a site redesign on the backend.

Although I was prepared with a strong technical background for providing SEO services, I didn’t have the experience building an SEO business from scratch. The business aspect is where many SEO practitioners hit the wall.

As an SEO practitioner, I figured it would be pretty easy to establish a profitable SEO company–albeit a bit naively as I soon found out. What began as a quick trip to register my business name with the state government turned into a 7-day crash course on business entities. I ordered two books, called lawyers/friends, and read countless blogs before making my final decision. Looking back I’m glad I took the time to make the right decision. But having an experienced mentor could have saved me a lot of effort better spent building my business.

Next came a mountain of business documentation: invoicing, monthly reports, sales letters, white papers, initial reports, work flow charts and a business plan. All this and I hadn’t even begun to develop a website. This is one of the most difficult steps an SEO business owner must take. But there turned out to be a silver lining in all of it.

I was able to take what I learned working at a large SEO agency to help others better manage clients, develop proper work flow, and create strategies that work for clients. Now, I understood what it really took to get one off the ground and profitable.
